Description
From an old Casas Adobes estate in northwest Tucson is this I believe mid century or so Chilo Botes Mexican folk art tile, here mounted within a decorative copper and brass surround - actually from the hand of this same well referenced artisan. The charismatic flying bird depiction is very well painted, comprising one of Botes's more desirable renderings. This was meant as a sort of trivet dish, and so used on a table in that Old Pueblo home. So you know the house was filled with things like this, in common with many upper tier residences in that time. The artwork is signed twice - once with his "CB" conjoined monogram at the lower left of the tile face, and again with "CB / Mexico" chisel engraved to the under foot of the brass frame. Chilo Botes plied his trade in the old colonial town of San Miguel de Allende, a destination of choice for many Southern Arizona ex pats. The ancient houses in that charming locale were bought up, fixed up, and decorated with furniture and artisanal treasures like this bench crafted effort. Some of these things then traveled north - a reason why many have shown up in local estates over the years.. Condition appears quite good though not absolutely pristine perfect, with a distinct aura of time to the surfaces. The tile is very well preserved, and you might search a long time for its better. . The copper and brass box framing has partial seam separation at the lower left corner seam (see pics) - this can be reinforced with a small bit of solder, or continue to serve as is. Keep in mind these were originally meant for some purposeful use, so typical signs of service are part of the history. I'm basically nitpicking for the obsessive here and a look at the pics should give a good idea of appearance and condition - all said, it still presents fairly well. Size of the Botes tile is about 4 1/8 in. vertical and 4 1/8 in. horizontal. His crafted copper and brass framing is about 6 in. vertical and 6 in. horizontal at the framing lip - about 1 3/4 in. high at the corners. If visual charm is a requisite and you already know what is offered here, this will have great meaning for you.
