Munshiganj police arrested a man early today from Bhola’s Ilisha in connection with the murder of a 22-year-old woman, Saheda Begum, whose bullet-riddled body was found on the Dhaka-Mawa highway in Sreenagar upazila on November 30.
The arrestee, identified as Touhid Sheikh Tonmoy, 23, of Dhaka’s Wari, was arrested based on a tip-off, said Ishtiaq Ashfaq Russell, inspector of Munshiganj Detective Branch (DB) police.
Following his arrest, police recovered a pistol, allegedly used in the murder, from South Keraniganj in Dhaka.
On Saturday morning, Saheda’s body was found along with five bullet shells at the crime scene. That night, her mother Jarina Begum filed a case with Sreenagar Police Station, naming an unknown person as the accused.
Qaiyum Uddin Chowdhury, officer-in-charge of the police station confirmed that the case was filed.
However, Jarina later alleged to reporters that Touhid, who was romantically involved with her daughter and allegedly involved in drug dealings, was responsible for the murder.
“I forbade my daughter from seeing him, but he killed her,” she said.
Saheda, hailing from Begunbari in Mymensingh, lived with her mother and brother in a rented house in Dhaka’s Wari area.
